A Reality-Shattering Update. Version 0.3 is out!

Hi! I'm back with a new update announcement. I've been getting a lot of feedback since the 0.2 update and I'm working hard to get to the final version of the game while taking your comments into account.

Fallacy Quiz is a game to learn to spot logical and rhetorical fallacies, it's available on itch.io in early access, can be added to your wishlist on steam and it's getting closer and closer to completion. In this post, I'd like to share all the additions, changes and bug fixes since last update. Let's get into it!

New Features

Play the game inside the game? Do we live in a simulation?

The Fallacy Glossary addition in 0.2 was a big hit among players. It's a simulation of a book. You unlock fallacy definitions while you play. Until now you had to finish a game and then go back to the main menu to check the glossary. A lot of you asked for definitions to be accessible during the game itself, and it's what was planned from the beginning, but I didn't want the definition to be shown outside of the book so I had to decide how to include the book during the gameplay.

The solution was quite funny but it was a real challenge to implement. When you want to check a definition, the game freezes and the camera zooms-out, turns out you were playing Fallacy Quiz on a virtual computer inside the game this whole time and the glossary is lying on the desk in front of you. The idea is to make it feel like you have a physical glossary that you can just check by pausing the game. I'm really satisfied with the effect, I had to model a 3D desk environment but it was worth it in my opinion.

This was even more reality shattering when I was working on it on my computer!

This really changes the way you play since you can now check and understand why you failed or even why you got it right by chance.

Updates

A lot of my friends decided to get the game and it means a lot to me, but when they showed it to me, it turns out they were not using the latest version, some of them did not even get the glossary from 0.2. This is why I added a little text on the title screen to let you know when a new update is available, you will be able to click on this text to know what the update is about.

It's not auto-updating, just letting you know if you have the latest update or not. And since you are getting the game in early access (thank you so much for supporting the game and getting it at a lower price while I'm still working on it, you are the best!!!), I'm sure you would want to know when the 1.0 is finally available!

Confetti

This might be the biggest announcement: there are now confetti when you successfully answer a question. Yeah, I know, it's okay if you stop reading here and go update the game, I understand you excitement, it's totally warranted.

Changes

Look and feel

I spent a lot of time refining the look of the 3D environments in the game when you check the glossary. It was a lot of tweaking to get it right, I think the end result is stunning.

But it's not fair sometimes!

The game was indeed not fair in some cases. Some fallacies are subsets or special cases of other fallacies. For instance an anecdotal evidence could be seen as a hasty generalization. So when there's a question about an anecdotal evidence you could have hasty generalization as a possible answer but the game would tell you you are wrong. To fix this I created an invisible system: groups to track fallacy similarity, so that fallacies that are too similar would not be offered as possible answers simultaneously. As a user it doesn't feel that different, if it wasn't for this post you might never know it's even there. But it will tremendously reduce those ambiguities and the game will feel smoother for it. If you ever encounter an ambiguous answer, let me know and I could correct it thanks to this system in a future update.

Flip through that book!!!

You can now keep the arrow keys pressed down to flip through the book. It's not a key feature, but it sure is a satisfying one.

Polished game selection screen

I'm still wasting time on the game selection screen, but I love it so much, it's like way too polished at this point. I changed the color scheme with a gradient for the background and added some particles this time around.

Fixes

Thank you so so much for all the messages I got about bugs and typos, I took all of them into account.

  • The sound effects are no longer glitching when using the pause menu.
  • The issue with the expert mode that was unlocked multiple times is fixed.
  • The infinite score glitch is patched (even if it was a funny one).
  • And you can't have the same question twice anymore when you play on your sixth game (yeah it was a weird one).
  • Oh. And all the typos... corrected. But I'm sure there are even more of them, so let me know!

_____

That's it for today. The fact that you can know check the glossary during the game in a virtual desk environment is the big achievement of this update and I can't wait for you to check it out!

We are getting closer to the final release and I still have two big features I want to include and a massive amount of new questions, so stay tuned.

It's hard to do everything on my own, but you getting the game, sharing feedback, liking/sharing/commenting on this post, talking about the game, adding it to your wishlist on steam, any and all of this helps me so much, so thanks for following and supporting the development of Fallacy Quiz.
